COMPETITION BRIEF - THE HOUSE OF ILLUSTRATION -

FOLIO OF GHOST STORIES

One final year brief had to be a competition brief and I chose the House of Illustrations Folio of Ghost Stories Illustration competition.

Brief:

For your entry you must provide 3 finished illustrations and a binding design. The illustrations must be uploaded to the website as indicated in the details section below. Download and read the folio ghost stories which contains 3 stories, ‘The Treasure of Abbot Thomas’, ‘The Upper Berth’ and ‘A Tale of an Empty House’. You must provide one illustration for each story. Each illustration entered must be accompanied by the story title and an appropriate caption with a maximum of 25 words. The caption should be taken directly from the story. We require full page illustrations, either in colour or black and white, one for each of the selected stories. The illustrations can be in any medium suitable for reproduction; however all entries must be suitable for the dimensions given here.

Folio Society books are always bound as hardback without paper dust jackets. The bindings have no blurbs, prices, barcodes or ISBns, and generally the title and author are confined to the spine but can be repeated on the front of the book. Because this book is a compilation, there is no author for the spine. Most Folio books are bound in cloth, blocked with strong graphic imagery, often only using two colours applied one over the other. Simple, graphic designs work very well technically and stand out on the shelf. Printed covers are also effective, but can sometimes be unsuitable for reproduction on cloth.
